Petit Port
Guernsey
At a glance
Petit Port is a secluded sandy bay on the south coast of Guernsey, reached from La Route de Jerbourg in St Martins. Access is on foot via more than 270 steep steps, making the approach an important part of the visit and a consideration for anyone carrying beach equipment or planning a return climb.
At the bottom, the steps open onto a small beach with coastal scenery and a sense of separation from the road above. Petit Port is suited to a quiet stretch of time by the sea, whether that means reading, eating a picnic or bringing swimming equipment for a dip. The setting is simple and natural, with the beach itself providing the focus rather than a built-up seafront or organised attraction.
The bay may be particularly appealing to visitors looking for space and calm. A book, picnic and swimming costume are all suggested companions for a longer visit, and the secluded setting can sometimes leave the beach feeling unusually private. Conditions and access should be considered before setting out, especially because the steep steps are the only described route down to the shore.
Petit Port does not have refreshments directly on the beach. After returning up the steps, Hotel Jerbourg and Jerbourg Kiosk are a short walk away for refreshments. Public toilets are located at Doyle Column, across the road. These facilities are separate from the beach, so a visit benefits from planning around the walk back up and the short onward stroll.
The bay works well as part of a coastal outing around Jerbourg, particularly for visitors who value a quieter beach setting over immediate convenience. It is an outdoor destination with no booking-led format, formal programme or on-beach dining described. The combination of a sandy shore, secluded position and demanding access gives Petit Port a distinct character within the island’s coastal landscape.
